To install and run Wing Commander IV for Windows 95, you must have the DOS version installed. In addition, you will need Microsoft's DirectX 2. You can obtain DirectX 2, from our web page. For more information on DirectX 2, consult the README95.TXT file included in this package. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- [2.0] Installation Installation consists of a batch file which will prompt you with a series of questions. Please read the questions carefully, and answer [Y] for YES or [N] for NO to each one. [2.1] Locating Wing Commander IV for MS-DOS If WC4 is not located in the default directory (C:\WC4), you will need to know where on your hard drive the game is located to continue. If you do not know where WC4 is located, you can use the following steps : 1) Click Start 2) Click Find 3) Click Files or Folders 4) Click View 5) Click Details 6) In the Named field, type wc4.exe 7) Click Browse 8) Click drive C: (or another hard drive) 9) Click OK 10) Click Find Now If WC4 is installed, it will be listed under name. Look at the field "In Folder". WC4 is installed here. Write this down, for you will need later during the installation process. [2.2] Command-line Parameters of INSTALL If Wing Commander IV is in the default directory (C:\WC4) simply typee INSTALL. If WC4 is not in the default directory, use section [2.1] to locate WC4. To install the Windows 95 version, open an MS-DOS prompt window (Start/Programs/MS-DOS Prompt). Change to the directory where you have extracted these files. Type INSTALL followed by the directory name. For example, if you located WC4 in the folder C:\GAMES\WC4, you would type INSTALL C:\GAMES\WC4 Be sure to pay close attention to punctuation. The installation process will prompt you with questions and then install the Windows version accordingly. [2.3] INSTALL Limitations If the game is not in the default directory/folder (C:\WC4), you will not be prompted to create a Desktop icon or a Program Group under the Start menu. These two features are purely for ease in starting the game itself. A desktop icon is simply an icon that is placed on your desktop that, when double clicked, will automatically start the game for you. A program group is similar to a desktop icon except that it is located in your Start Menu under 'Programs.' For instructions on how to create a Desktop Icon, see section [2.5] of this document. [2.4] Manual Installation To manually install Wing Commander IV for Windows 95 you will need to copy the following files from the self-extracting archive that you downloaded to the directory that contains your DOS version of Wing Commander IV : WC4W.EXE, XANLIB.DLL and README95.TXT. To do this through Windows 95, simply: 1) Open Explorer and go to the folder that contains the extracted files. 2) Highlight the files WC4W.EXE, XANLIB.DLL and README.TXT by holding down the "CTRL" button on your keyboard while you click once on each of these files 3) Once you are sure that these files are highlighted, select "Edit" from Explorer's tool bar (it's in the upper-left hand corner of the Explorer window) 4) Select "Copy" from the drop down menu 5) Go to the folder that contains your DOS version of Wing Commander IV 6) Select "Edit" from Explorer's tool bar 7) Select "Paste" from its drop down menu At this time you should see Windows copying these files. Once completed, you are ready to play! To manually install Wing Commander IV for Windows 95 in a DOS prompt, simply: 1) Change directories to the directory that contains the files you extracted from WC4WIN95.EXE 2) Copy the files WC4W.EXE, XANLIB.DLL and README95.TXT to the directory that contains the DOS version of Wing Commander IV (For example : if you extracted the contents of WC4WIN95.EXE to the "C:\TEMP" diretory and your DOS version of Wing Commander IV is located in the "C:\GAMES\WC4" directory, to copy all of the necessary files, your DOS commands should look as follows: C:\TEMP>COPY WC4W.EXE C:\GAMES\WC4\ C:\TEMP>COPY XANLIB.DLL C:\GAMES\WC4\ C:\TEMP>COPY README95.TXT C:\GAMES\WC4\ After typing each of these lines you should see the files copy. If you receive an error message, make sure you are in the correct directory and that your spelling and punctuation are correct. [2.5] Creating a Desktop Icon To create a desktop icon for Wing Commander IV for Windows 95 be sure that you have successfully installed the game and then follow the following steps : 1) Right-click your mouse on an empty area of your desktop. This will give you a drop down menu with several choices one of which is "New" 2) Left click on "New" 3) Select "Shortcut" 4) This yields a window entitled "Create Shortcut," in the field entitled "Command Line" type in the path to WC4W.exe (Usually C:\WC4\WC4W.EXE) 5) Click on "Next" 6) In the field entitled "Select a Title for the Program" type in "Wing Commander IV for Windows 95" 7) Click on "Finish" and you're done! ---------------------------------------------------------------------- [3.0] Running Wing Commander IV for Windows 95 There are three ways you can start Wing Commander IV for Windows 95. First, you may simply start Wing Commander IV for Windows 95 through Explorer by opening Explorer, going to the directory where you installed WC4W.EXE and double clicking on WC42.EXE (for help installing Wing Commander IV for Windows 95 please see section [2.0]) The second method is by double clicking on the desktop icon. This will put you directly into the game. INSTALL.BAT will only prompt you to make a desktop icon if you have the DOS version of Wing Commander IV installed in the C:\WC4 directory. If you would like to manually create a desktop icon for Wing Commander IV for Windows 95, see section [2.5]. The third method is by left clicking on the start button, clicking on "Programs", clicking on "Origin" then clicking on "Wing Commander IV for Windows 95" You will only have this option, once again, if the DOS version of the game was located in C:\WC4. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- [4.0] Troubleshooting If, for any reason, you encounter difficulties using INSTALL.BAT to install Wing Commander IV for Windows 95, please see section [2.4] entitled "Manual Installation" to attempt to manually install the Windows 95 version of the game.
